Mechanical Harvester Crew – Scotland, Uist

 

The Role:

 

The Mechanical Harvester Crew is responsible for the safe and efficient operation of Uist Asco’s specially designed seaweed harvesting vessels. The crew will oversee all operations on the vessel, working as a fleet to ensure seaweed is sustainably harvested and transported to the shore in a safe and timely manner.

 

Responsibilities:

The Mechanical Harvester Crew will work in teams of two to three and report to the Mechanical Harvester Resource Manager. The crew will be designated responsibilities which reflect their skill and experience level. We aim to provide training where necessary to achieve a fully competent crew who are versatile in all aspects of mechanical harvesting operations. Internal contacts include Hand Harvest Resource Manager, Production/Plant Manager, Director of Projects – Europe, Resource Science, Factory Operatives, Quality Assurance Department and Lorry Operatives.

    • Ensure all vessels have daily/regular inspections/check completed
    • Ensuring any faults or maintenance issues within the harvesting set-up (which are not possible to remediate immediately) are brought to the attention of the Management
    • Operating the various vessels in the fleet within the limitations required in the regulations and within the standards set by both the company and the Maritime and Coastguard Agency
    • Work closely with Resource Management and Resource Science, to ensure seaweed harvesting is efficient and sustainable within the guidelines set by the company’s Sustainable Management Plan
    • Maintaining a clean working area on board the vessels
    • Maintaining good hygiene and cleanliness standards aboard the vessels
    • Cutting and handling the required tonnage of seaweed and maintaining the company’s strict sustainability policies
    • Moving filled bags of seaweed to a landing site and securing them in place
    • Perform regular maintenance tasks, within ability
    • Support the company’s vision and policies regarding Health & Safety, Corporate Culture, and Environmental Management by displaying the appropriate behaviours towards meeting the company’s objectives in these areas
    • Uphold sound relationships within the company’s staffing structure and also with the local community as an Uist Asco representative

 

Education/Competencies: (PREFERRED BUT NOT ESSENTIAL – WE CAN HELP WHERE TRAINING IS NEEDED)

    • Minimum of 1-year relevant experience (e.g. seaweed harvesting, fishing, fish farming, aquaculture in which vessels of varying sizes have been used)
    • A valid RYA commercially endorsed certification (Day Skipper equivalent or higher)
    • Valid ML5/ENG1 Medical Certificate or ability to achieve certificate
